AIMS AND OBJECTIVES

The West Indies Cricket Umpire's Association (WICUA) is the Governing Body for Umpire’s associations in the Americas. This body is recognised by the West Indies Cricket Board and the International Cricket Council as the representative for Umpires in the Americas region.

Our current member bodies include the following territories:

Barbados, Bermuda, Canada, Cayman Islands (recently elected to full membership in July 2011), Guyana, Jamaica, the Leeward Islands (Antigua, Anguilla, Montserrrat, St. Kitts and Nevis, and the British Virgin Islands), Trinidad and Tobago, the Windward Islands ( Dominica, Grenada, St. Lucia and St. Vincent), and the United States of America.

WICUA is working closely with the Local Umpire Associations in the Americas to attract and train young and willing umpires so that some of them, can be recognised  and be elevated to the International Cricket Council Panel of Umpires, as the demand for trained and qualified umpires keeps growing at a phenomenal rate.

Another aim is to ensure the level of respect is brought back to the game of cricket. Our main focus is to impart complete knowledge of the laws of the sport to not just as many umpires as possible but also to heads of clubs, leagues, captains, and other cricket organizations with a view of raising the general understanding of the sport and the game’s laws.

The current Committee Training Chairman is Mr. Peter Nero from Trinidad and Tobago.  He works and liaises with the other local Training Committees in each Territory.

We are also working closely with other Umpire’s association worldwide to train and expose some of our young umpires to their culture and some of their own to our culture. To date there have been a few exchange programmes. These have been with the United Kingdom, South Africa and Bangladesh. They are more planned for the future.
